Gateway

Gateway opens a new pathway from school to the world of work.

It's a great opportunity to blend school study with workplace learning and experience. It is open to senior students in Year 12 and 13.

Gateway helps build skills for employment, working in real workplaces on real tasks. It offers students the opportunity to try out potential careers and build links with Industry Training Organisations, apprenticeships and workplaces.

Students complete Health & Safety units and First Aid course before completing units relevant to their chosen career area, many of which are assessed in the workplace.

What have been the benefits for the students?

Gateway gives students the opportunity to use the skills and knowledge they have obtained in study and life experience and apply them to a real life work environment. They are able to gain insight into working life and learn skills in specific industries. In many cases the Gateway experience has given students a head start in their chosen careers and often leads to further training opportunities such as apprenticeships, industry training or employment. Some examples of recent Gateway placements include:

  • Automotive Engineering

  • Building

  • Tourism

  • Sports & Recreation

  • Mechanical Engineering

  • Hairdressing

  • Sheep & Beef Farming

  • Horticulture

  • Agricultural Contracting

  • Electrical

  • Water & Waste Management

  • Butchery

  • Auto Electrical

How it works:

Students interested in Gateway as an option complete an application form, available on the school website. Students undergo an interview process with the Gateway Co-ordinator and their Dean to assess their eligibility and commitment to the programme. Students must demonstrate a high level of motivation, strong self-management skills, clear vocational focus.

Once accepted, the students receive a personalised learning plan that outlines the units they will be offered. Typically there are 20 credits at Level 2 or 3 depending on the course.

Once students have completed Health & Safety units and First Aid Certificate they are able to commence a work placement one day a week, usually Fridays, for the remainder of the year.

Gateway is a great opportunity to gain specific vocational skills leading to future employment including apprenticeships, make progress towards qualifications in a chosen career, and clarify tertiary education choices.
